We have the same number of hours in the day as our ancestors and yet time seems to be going faster. It’s becoming increasingly more common to hear of people, whether friend you know, or people from work who have struggled under the pressure of juggling all their plates.
We all have busy, productive lives – both in and out of the office. Stress at home can cause all sorts of family problems whilst stress in the workplace has now become such a major consideration for employers, that they are strongly addressing new solutions that alleviate the issue for both themselves and their employees.
How is it that we allow stress levels to become so sky high, leaving us unable to perform our day-to-day tasks at the expense of our mental and physical health?
Taking time out doesn’t have to mean on your own, away from the business, it can be something you, as a team, do collectively. Whether it’s a day spent walking out in the open, transformational breathing, yoga and meditation, it’s an opportunity for you and your colleagues to learn some new tricks to dealing with life’s daily grind.
The significance of consciously using breathing is that it adds a pause to your response time, it stops you from rushing into thought, it calms the brain and the body and allows you to collect yourself in the face of any tense situation. It seems strange that the one thing that comes so naturally to us, is often the one thing we forget to do!
By doing this activity in a group, not only do you place it within a business context but you also associate the practice of calm and relaxation with your day-to-day work. If you are ‘the boss’, to be aware of the threat of stress and to proactively address rising stress levels will show that you care about your team more than you do the bottom line. Your employees will feel more open to discussions about stress, armed with some skills to face tense situations and hopefully have fewer reasons to take time off due to stress.
For many business teams, the opportunity to head out to the hills to soak up some of nature’s energy doesn’t come around too often. Time away from the office is hard to orchestrate. More recently however, there seems to be a movement happening. Business heads recognise the importance of time away from the desk and providing opportunities for their employees to freely do so. Corporate away days or retreats are evolving. Not only is it’s about spending time with each other to think collectively about the business, it’s also about creating experiences for work teams that ensure they come away feeling better and more invigorated about themselves and their work. Having a boozy dinner and a wiggle on the dance floor definitely has its merits for team bonding, we aren’t saying ban those! What we are saying is that businesses can incorporate work, with a little health and wellbeing and a good quality time too.
Across the houses, we have held many retreats, away days and business meetings. Each day is completely different. Some come for the great outdoors, to use the grounds of the houses to get back to nature, whilst others like to take advantage of the many spaces and facilities we have available.
