We are the first people to say YES to a party, and we have certainly seen our fair share over the years. But perhaps it’s our age, or is something new emerging? Have people found the perfect balance between having a good time whilst staying relatively non-toxicated? Here we look at a few healthy living products and activities that have sprung up recently on the party scene.
M is for Mocktail
Often befriended in January when you’re trying to be good. Non alcoholic cocktails have been around for a while but are becoming less of a second rate choice as more and more people make the choice not to drink. Half the fun of having a cocktail is in the showmanship, the outlandish glasses and overly large pieces of fruit, so why deny the enjoyment, just because of the booze! At our Canvas and Stone houses, we have plenty of non-drinkers that come to our events looking for something suitably celebratory but non-alcoholic. It’s important to be able to offer everyone just as good a time. In 2016 they have appeared a lot more on the menus of pubs and bars and are often more enticing than a badly made Bloody Mary, so we say go for it.
Two words you possibly haven’t put together before, but with the busyness of 21st Century living – travel, hangovers and tiredness – you can find your body needs a little extra help to be able to get up and carry on with your day. One particular favourite are the reviving and restorative, Faust’s Potions for Discerning Night Owls! They make a great alternative wedding or party favour for couples wanting to give something healthy, useful and completely natural to their guests. They have created single shots of goodness to take before you go to a party or to help you have a good night’s sleep and reduce the effects of hangovers. Elmore Court handed them out to their guests at this year’s summer party and the Glastonbury boutique camping area, Pennard Orchard at Pennard House included them in their tipi welcome pack for guests this year. If you’re going to drink, put some goodness back in you to at least give yourself a fighting chance to be operational the next day!
But being completely booze and sugar free is not everyone’s idea of life. So one evolution we particularly like which we have heard of lately are superfood mixers that are used with your normal preferred spirit. If you have managed to wean yourself off the fizzy drinks and soda water is about as bubbly as your non alcoholic drinks get, then this will be a welcome tune to your ears.
The mixer choices are filled with antioxidants, slow releasing caffeine (you have to get your hit somewhere). At Marcus Wareing’s restaurant Tredwell’s they use spices like cardamom to help digestion and detoxification and/or cucumber to help hydrate.
If you like the sound of that but still not with the alcohol, there is a new gin tasting spirit by Seedlip Drinks that tastes like gin and looks like gin but is not alcoholic. Their motto: ‘solving the dilemma of what to drink when you’re not drinking’ which sounds like the answer to a lot of people’s prayers. They advise you to mix it with your Fever Tree tonic to make the perfect blend.
Rave your way into the Day!
The early bird really does catch that feel-good worm at hugely popular Morning Gloryville – a booze free, early morning “night” where the likes of Fatboy Slim have even DJ’d. Morning Gloryville ravers say they feel elated after a morning on the dance floor and head off to their ‘normal’ jobs with an added spring in their step. Dancing, whilst in any form of sobriety should always be encouraged in our book but this kind of event probably isn’t for anyone who still admits to needing more than a few drinks to get on the dance floor. If Anselm was still a DJ I’m sure we would have seen him gracing the early-bird scene with his enormously large tunes! There’s still a chance, who knows..?!
Like the idea of healthy hedonism?
Any alternatives – whether drink or dance related – that give you as good time and ease the suffering the next day can only be a good thing. If you are planning a party and want to offer broader options that are healthier and lighter on your body and soul, why not consider introducing some of the above ideas to your event? Being a host that can cater to the whims of your guests, give them a good time and pre-empt their hangovers for them, surely makes you the best host of them all, right?
The nature of our blank canvas food and drink menus means we can make your events exactly how you want them. If you have a crazy idea, we are all for hearing about it and working with you to make it happen. Whether that’s breakfast for dinner, 6am raves or non-alcoholic spirits, our team revel in making dreams come true, so why not get in touch?
